Train for a New Career

If you are looking for a new job, you may notice there are many careers available that may be beyond your expertise. If you want to move forward in your career or change it altogether, you may need to re-create yourself to be more marketable.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider the career you want. Is it completely different from the one you are currently working in, or is it in the same field? Take the time to research the different careers that interest you. You may be surprised at what you find. Something that never would have appealed to you when you graduated from high school might now be a career that truly holds your interest.

Consider available options on training and education. There are many online colleges that offer degrees and certificates. Thoroughly research the college beforehand and check to see if it is accredited. The Elearners website is a great place to find many online colleges. You can get a synopsis of the courses they offer, the degrees they turn out and much more. The link to Elearners is provided below in the Resources section.

Check with your state and local employment offices. They have great resources and counselors available to help you in your quest for a new career.

Consider applying for financial aid, if finances are holding you back from training for a new career. Pell grants and school loans are available to most people and can considerably help with the cost of your training. Many of the specialty schools are now accepting the G.I. Bill as well. Some of the career fields that are understaffed right now, such as nursing and teaching, are offering a chance to forgive your student loans once you have completed training and have taken a job in that field.

Before you begin your new career training, talk with your family. Raising a family at the same time can be difficult, and everyone will have to pull together to help you succeed.

    • 6

Set aside a specific time to study. This may be after your children go to bed, or after your husband leaves for the graveyard shift. Dedicating this time for your studies will help you concentrate and retain what you are learning.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you have finished your training, congratulate yourself. It can be really tough to train for a new career, and you deserve to feel proud for accomplishing your goal.

  • Avoid colleges that are not accredited, since most employers will not hire you over someone who has graduated from an accredited college.
