How to Become a Licenced Architect in Oregon

Architects design all types of structures including homes, schools and commercial buildings. Designs need to meet local building and safety codes, as different structures may have different codes. The job can be complex and requires both creativity and attention to detail. All states require an architect to have a license in order for them to charge for architectural services. The requirements to obtain a license vary by state. Follow the steps below to become a licensed architect in Oregon.

      Graduate with a degree in architecture from a program accredited by the National Accrediting Board. There are over one hundred programs accredited by the board located throughout the Unites States. To become a licensed architect in Oregon the minimum degree required is a bachelor’s degree. Some programs also offer a masters degree or a doctorate.

      Obtain an Internship. The Oregon Board of Architect Examiners requires graduates of an architectural program complete the Intern Development Program under the direct supervision of a licensed architect. Internships can be obtained by contacting architectural firms directly or through personal contacts.

      Complete seven hundred hours of training units in various areas of architecture including design development, building cost analysis and schematic design. Be sure to keep a verification record of your training hours. Verification will need to be provided when you apply for the Oregon license.

      Take the Architectural Registration Exam. The exam is given by the Oregon Board of Architect Examiners and is held during scheduled board meetings. It is an open book test and covers all areas of architecture.

      Apply for reciprocity. For those who are already licensed in a state other than Oregon an alternative way to obtain an Oregon license is through reciprocity. Applications for reciprocity can be obtained through the National Council of Architectural Registration Board.
