How to Become a Work From Home Employee

Working from home from time to time can become a great tool for balancing work and your personal life. You can join a conference call one minute and take the kids to school the next. Let your lunch break be a nap in your own bed. So, how does one become a work from home employee or negotiate for a work from home schedule? Find out how to become a work from home team member with the following tips.

Instructions

    • 1

Assess your current role. Are you secure in your job? Also, look at your duties. Are most of them conducted over the phone or via email?

    • 2

Take a cue from other employees on your team or even your manager. If you notice they work from home when they have personal commitments, this is your chance to set up a work from home relationship with your job.

    • 3

Assess your personal commitments. What will your reasons be for working from home? Are there others who also work from home in your office?

    • 4

Schedule time with your manager. Casually bring up the work from home issue and propose that you believe it could work better with your personal commitments.

    • 5

Bring up the positive aspects of the working from home situation, such as you'll get more done because you'll cut out commuting time. Also, bring up issues of gas prices, children, current situations and various other factors. Mention that all of your duties can be done remotely.

    • 6

Propose a specific schedule, starting with working from home on a Friday or Monday. Usually, one day a week works well for a transition. Ask for more days per week when you show your boss how well the situation is working out.

I agree, these are great tips. I would love to work as an employee at home. I know there are pros and cons because as an employee there maybe set hours where as as an independent contractor, it's usually a bit more flexible. Maddy
