Promote yourself with a blog

In order to get a freelance writing gig, you need to show your "clips" (published articles). In some cases, the employer will only want to see clips and not a resume. If you write web content or have creative work published in e-zines, the best way to keep track of them is with a blog. You can not only keep track of the tips you have written; you can also go back to them for research on similar topics. A well organized blog is great promotion for a writer.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your account and blog on Blogger or another free blog website. Work on the template and any sidebars as you go along. At the outset, concentrate on the About Me section, a subtitle under the large blog title and the title itself.

    • 2

Write down in your notebook the titles of your articles that you know have appeared on the web.

    • 3

Figure out some specific categories that your online content falls into. If, for example, you write a lot of health-related articles, instead of just having a "Health" post category, divide it further into into specific treatments, diseases or children's care. Set up your posts (or categories) with a free image, a very short personal observation about the articles below or about the topic and then a list of links for that category.

    • 4

Find your titles by going to Google and searching with your exact title inside of quote marks. Copy and paste the URL to put into Blogger's "link" window in order to add the link to your post.

    • 5

Cross the title off of your list in your notebook and move to the next one.

    • 6

Hit the "Publish Post" button when you're done working on a particular category.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep in mind that if you work for a web content broker, you never where your work is going to wind up. You also do not have any rights to the work.

  • Keep each category only about two computer screens long; otherwise it's too hard to manage and all of the links will just seem to blur together when you look at it.

  • Since Blogger has the newest posts first, put links to any articles your very best work in your sidebar so that they won't get pushed down off of the front page.

  • Don't try to track down every single article or blog post you've ever written. Just do what you can and highlight the best of your work.

  • Don't be upset if your work sold through a web broker is under another name. This is ghostwriting and it's a common practice. Do be upset if your work with your byline prominently displayed is published under another name. That would be plagarism.
