How to Sell Used Books on Amazon.com

Most people buy a book, read it once and never pick it up again. While some books hold sentimental or reference value, many of the titles you own sit dormant on a shelf collecting dust. While the book may never be worth the money you originally paid for it, you have a chance to make back some of your investment by selling the book online. As the world's largest bookseller, Amazon.com is one of the largest used book markets on the internet.

Instructions

  1. Become an Amazon Seller

    • 1

Sign up for an Amazon.com account. To do this, look at the top of any Amazon.com screen and click the link that says "New Customer?"

    • 2

Register for your account by entering your name, email address and password. Then, select "Continue."

    • 3

Open you seller account information. To do this, click the link in the top right side of the page that says "Your Account." On the next screen, look on the far right column for the link that says "Your Seller Account." Choose this link. You will arrive at the Amazon.com Seller Account page.

    • 4

Setup your payment preferences. Click the link that says "View Your Amazon.com Payment Page."

    • 5

Decide how you would like to be paid. Amazon.com allows you to receive payment in one of two ways — an Amazon.com gift certificate or in cash. If you choose the gift certificate, it will automatically be credited to your account when payments are made. If you choose the cash option, you will be prompted to enter information about your checking account. Amazon.com will direct deposit payment every two weeks if you provide a valid bank routing and account numbers. Click "Continue," and you will be sent back to the "Sellers" page.

    Sell a Used Book

    • 6

List a book. From your "Sellers" page, click the "List an Item" link.

    • 7

List the title or code number. On the next screen, you can enter the information about the book you want to sell. Amazon will let you search for your item by title, ISBN number (the publisher's number located near the UPC code) or the ASIC (Amazon's internal stock number). Enter this information, and click "Continue."

    • 8

Select the correct item. For instance, we're going to sell a copy of The Bible. We entered "Bible" as a search term and Amazon returned a list of titles. Select the title that is an exact match to your book.

    • 9

Determine the condition. If you book is brand new, then let people know that. If it is well worn, let people know that as well. Using Amazon's guide for conditions, select the one that best describes your item. You can also list any specific notes about the item (for instance, if the dust cover is missing). Then, click "Continue."

    • 10

Set your price. Amazon will provide the latest pricing information for other new and used sellers on their website, as well as their retail price. They will also provide a recommended price, based on the average price for a book in your condition. Name your price in the specified line. Also, select whether you will offer any shipping methods other than U.S. Postal Service Media Mail (Amazon.com will reimburse you for shipping charges as a result of your sale). Then, click "List Your Item."

    • 11

Wait for a sale. Your item will be listed online, ready to be consumed by other book lovers.

Tips & Warnings

  • When setting a price, try to set it low enough to be attractive to a buyer, but high enough to make some money.

  • Your selling price is the basis for Amazon's commission fee. They will take a portion of your sale as a listing fee for your item.
