Instructions

Turn off the computers you want to connect. Open your computers’ chassis and install the wired or wireless local area network (LAN) cards if you are using wireless connection for desktop computers.

      Typical DSL modem

Connect the DSL modem to your telephone line, making sure to plug the wire firmly into the slot at the back of the modem marked "DSL" or "Internet." Connect one end of the cat5 wire you received with your DSL modem into the Ethernet slot on the back of the modem. Plug your modem to a power source and turn it on.

      Broadband router

Connect your broadband router to your DSL modem. Connect the second end of the cat5 wire you received with your DSL modem (the same wire you connected in Step 2 above) to the router, making sure to plug it into the slot marked "Ethernet" on the back of the router.

Connect your broadband router to a power source. Press "Power" to turn your router on. Wait for it to completely boot up with lights on the front panel lit.

    • 5

Connect your computers to the broadband router and complete installation. How you install the drivers for your wireless LAN cards depend on the steps outlined by the manufacturer. Open your computer’s CD drive and put the installation CD you received from the LAN card manufacturer in the drive. Run the CD to install the driver by following on-screen instructions. Install your LAN card when instructed to do so, if you are connecting a laptop computer. If you are using cat5 wires, plug one end of the wire to the back of your computer and the other end to the back of your router. Complete this step for every computer you want to connect to the Internet.

Open Internet Explorer in one of your computers and type 192.168.1.1 (This could vary depending on your service provider. Type the address given to you by your service provider.) Hit "Enter" on your Keyboard. Following instructions from your service provider, add your username or email address and password. Click "OK" or "Enter."

Tips & Warnings

  • If the address on Step 6 above doesn’t work, look in the document you received from your service provider for the correct address to enter in your Internet browser, or contact your DSL service provider for support.

  • If any of your computers are having trouble connecting, check that the cat5 wire is making contact. If you are wirelessly connected, make sure you have installed the driver for your LAN card and entered all the information required to access your broadband router.

  • You only need to perform Step 6 once to set up your DSL modem.
