How to Do Graphs in Illustrator

Illustrator is a wonderful tool for creating electronic art. Use Illustrator to create graphs for business presentations. Create a graph in Illustrator with some of the new Web 2.0 graphical effects that are popular on the Internet. Use your graphs to illustrate your data in an eye-catching display.

Instructions

      Click on the pie graph tool in the "Tools" palette.

      Draw a rectangle with the pie graph tool. A data window will prompt you to enter information.

      Import numbers from another document by clicking on the “Import Data” button. If you prefer to type your numbers in by hand, then you may enter the value in the data window as well.

      Create divisions in the graph by entering your numbers in separate columns in the data window.

      Select the graph with the white pointer tool. Make sure you have the outline of the graph selected. Press the delete key on your keyboard to remove the outline.

      Use the black pointer tool to select a single slice of the graph. Click on the color palette to change the color for that piece. Make each piece of the graph a different color.

      Use the white pointer tool to select the whole graph.

      Click on the “Window” drop-down menu. Select the transparency window. Click on the transparency tab. Set the opacity at 40 percent. Hit control and G on your PC keyboard to group the objects. Mac users will hit command and G to group objects. Close the data window.

      Click on the “Effect” drop-down menu. Add any three dimensional effects you want in your graph. For example, click on the bevel list to change the dimensions to “rounded.” Add surface to your graph by clicking on the surface list box, and select “Plastic shading.” Click on the preview check box to see a sample of what your graph will look like with different three dimensional effects. Click “OK” when you have found your favorite three dimensional effect.

      Drag the corners around the graph to position your graph pieces and get the finished look you want. Save the file and you’re done.
