Things You'll Need:
- Tile
- Paper
- Pencil

Step 1
Measure the area where you plan to place the back splash. Most of the time, back splashes will reach from the top of a counter up to a high cabinet or window, but you do not have to go that high.
-
Step 2
If you cannot find a picture of an example back splash, draw your own design on paper. Figure out whether you want a border, use random accent tiles, have hand-painted pieces or even do a checkered pattern.
-
Step 3
Once you have an initial pattern idea, you will then need to figure out which colors will best accent your kitchen and pop best with your chosen pattern.
-
Step 4
The size and shape of tiles are important because, if you have limited space to work with, you may not be able to pull off the pattern you want. Check your tile sizes with your wall measurement and pick shapes that will fit easily. Get an idea of how many tiles you are going to need.
-
Step 5
Check your design pattern. After you have purchased your ideal tiles, place all the tiles on a flat surface. You can use a table or even lay them on the floor. If you put the whole thing together before installing, you will see what the design looks like first-hand. Make sure everything goes together smoothly. Change or tweak your design as necessary.
-
Step 6
Because you will see the grout once the tiles are installed, the choice of grout color is also important. You may want to consider something a little darker than white because of the possibilities of kitchen messes, like grease. Just be sure the grout color also blends well with your chosen tile colors.
