How to Treat Pyelonephritis in Dogs

A dog that experiences pyelonephritis has inflammation of the kidney. A dog owner may become alarmed when a canine has pain during urination and becomes very thirsty. These are signs of pyelonephritis and require immediate care. Here’s how to recognize and treat pyelonephritis in dogs.

Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate your dog for symptoms of pyelonephritis. A dog that experiences this condition may have blood in his urine and lose interest in eating. He may also appear in pain and urinate often.

    • 2

Seek medical attention for your dog. This condition can be very painful to your dog and is also a health concern. If it’s after hours, take your canine to the animal hospital. She should have blood work and x-rays to make an accurate diagnosis.

    • 3

Develop a treatment plan for your dog. Antibiotics will be prescribed to fight the infection. If your dog is dehydrated, fluids may be needed to aid in healing.

    • 4

Consider diet changes in your canine. Diet can aggravate this condition in some dogs. If your canine’s doctor suspects a diet issue, ask about changing his dog food.

    • 5

Watch your dog closely. Canines with this condition need to be monitored closely. If your dog doesn’t appear to be healing or symptoms become worse, take him back to the vet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Schedule a follow up appointment. Even if your dog appears to be feeling better, schedule a follow up appointment. A vet is trained to recognize any possible issues and should examine your dog one last time.

  • Reduce your canine’s activity. While your dog is healing, minimize his activity. Keeping him indoors most of the time and leashed when outside can help.
