How to Keep a Child Occupied at a Wedding

There are some adults that get bored at weddings so imagine how bored some children could be if they’re not kept busy and engaged. To keep children happy, amused and complaint-free you should make sure that they have plenty to do. It can be a lot easier than it sounds. There are simple, inexpensive things that you can do to make sure that the kids are kept occupied at the wedding.

Instructions

Invite them to dance. Most children love music and bopping around to anything that’s playing. Instead of watching the kids run around, ask them to dance with you. Not only will it keep them occupied, but you’ll get the opportunity of seeing joy on a child’s face as they dance.

Have a conversation with them. Some kids just like discussing their everyday life including what toys they have, what their favorite show is and how much they like cartoon characters. Many children seem to gravitate toward adults that are interested in what they have to say. If most of the people take the time to have a conversation with the children at the wedding, even if it’s only for a few minutes, it could end up keeping them occupied for quite awhile.

Give the children a few coloring pages, a couple of sheets of blank paper and crayons. Most children love scribbling, drawing or coloring. They can color the pages and use the sheets of blank paper to make their own card to the bride and groom. It could end up keeping them from getting bored for awhile (see Resources).

Take them for a walk. Some children love exploring so take them for a walk around the grounds to see the sights. It will keep them from having to stay in one room for a long period of time.

    • 5

Let the children take a nap. When adults are exhausted they can leave whenever they want. Children, however, have to wait until the parents are ready. If they’re tired, just let them take a nap. Pull a few chairs together and create a makeshift bed for them. Don’t worry about the noise, some children can sleep through anything.

    • 6

Don’t force children to do something that they don’t want to do. Some children will just end up getting cranky which could end up leading to a tantrum. Ask them what they want to do. If they say that they don’t know, suggest some things that they may like to do.
