The rose-breasted grosbeak is a migratory bird that winters in Northern South America and Central America, returning to North America sometime in May. It summers in the mid and northeastern United States and parts of Canada. It breeds along the edges of deciduous and mixed forests and can often be seen near gardens or enticed to backyard feeders. Its primary diet consists of seeds, fruits and insects with a fondness for sunflower seeds.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bird feeder
  • Sunflower seeds
  1. Step 1

Choose a platform or hopper feeder for rose-breasted grosbeaks. Although they will attempt to feed from any feeder, small hanging feeders generally do not provide room or support for this large 7 to 8-inch bird. Platform feeders do not need to be fancy or expensive. A simple platform feeder can be constructed from a wooden frame with a piece of metal screening for a floor to allow rain and snow to flow freely and prevent water soaked seeds. Any flat surface, as long as it it elevated will work for a platform feeder.

  2. Step 2

Select an location near the edge of a wooded area. The trees will provide shelter for resting birds and protection from predators. An out of the way area if preferred as rose-breasted grosbeaks are skittish and do not like human intrusion. Choose a spot where you can easily observe them from a window without disturbing them.

  3. Step 3

Provide an ample supple of black oil sunflower seeds. These are preferred over striped sunflower seeds. They are high in fat content and will provide birds with added energy needed during the active breeding cycle. Add a birdbath or other water feature to your backyard. Running or dripping water attracts birds and will supply them with drinking water, as well as water for bathing.

  4. Step 4

Scatter seeds on the ground in sheltered areas. The rose-breasted grosbeak will happily oblige and feed from the ground as long as protection from predators is provided. Offer bits of dried fruits and an assortment of nut meats to find the preferred food. Birds, even when from the same species, may develop different preferences in food depending on their location. A good rule of thumb is to offer sunflower seeds and supplement with a variety of other food sources.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always make sure your feeder is off limits to the family cat.
  • Install a squirrel baffle between the ground and the feeder to prevent cats or other small predators from accessing the feeder, if necessary.
