How to Treat Pododermatitis in Dogs

Pododermatitis occurs when a canine experiences inflammation in the foot area. There is typically an underlying cause of the condition such as allergies or skin infections. This condition can affect dogs of all breeds and ages. Because it can cause serious discomfort to your canine it’s important to seek care.

Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate your dog for signs of pododermatitis. Canine owners often suspect a health issue when a dog itches his feet intensely. Your dog may also appear to never be comfortable.

    • 2

Take your dog to the vet for an evaluation. Contact your vet and request the soonest appointment. Catching pododermatitis early is important in treating this condition. Your vet may conduct a skin and biopsy test to make a diagnosis.

    • 3

Create a treatment plan for your dog. If an infection is present antibiotics should be administered for several weeks. A fungal infection in the area would require anti-fungal medication.

    • 4

Administer medication as directed. Even if your canine appears to be feeling better it’s important to administer medication as prescribed. Stopping early can cause health issues for your canine.

    • 5

Monitor your canine closely. Examine the affected area daily. If symptoms worsen contact your vet immediately for care.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask about providing supplements. To prevent future cases of pododermatitis ask about administering omega fatty acids. These supplements are affective in some dogs that experience allergies.

  • Encourage your canine to rest. Move your dog’s bed to a quite place in the home. Reduce stressful situations until your dog is feeling better.

Our rabbit got a pododermitis because of the carpets in our flat. He was treated with baytril and malasib for 2 month, and nothing happened ( all his 4 feets were by then already all bleedy!). We went to another vet, and he gave us tarantula logoplex ( rabbits, cats, dogs: 0,2 ml/kg ) and after 2 weeks his feets were "as new" - and the hair grew back. Now and then his feet get sore again, he gets the poison once more for 2 weeks.Best to combine both ( to avoid a bacterial arthritis in the elbows and knees!)
