Garlic can be easily dried at home using a variety of methods. Dried garlic can be stored and kept indefinitely without running the risk of becoming infected with bacteria or mold. Learn how to dry garlic without worrying about it losing the flavor and strength that makes it a favorite in dishes around the world. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Peel the cloves before you dry them. If you are having trouble getting rid of the skin completely, try soaking the garlic in lukewarm water for a couple of hours to loosen it up.

    • 2

Slice the garlic lengthwise. This will give you several thin, long portions, which will dry better and more consistently. If you are planning on using the dried garlic directly in recipes, then you can also slice it in the other direction for smaller pieces.

    • 3

Use a food dehydrator if you have access to one. This will allow you to dry garlic cloves whole (if you chose) and evenly, without having to worry about even air distribution or having to turn the pieces frequently. Use a low temperature setting and expect a drying time of at least 48 hours.

    • 4

You can also dry the garlic naturally by placing it in a well-ventilated area. If you do this, consider hanging the garlic rather than placing it on a flat surface, as the first option will allow for more even air circulation and prevent rotting.

    • 5

Use your oven as a substitute for the dehydrator if you’re in a hurry. Simply place the thinly sliced garlic on a cookie sheet and cook at the lowest temperature possible until the slices look crispy.

Tips & Warnings

  • It can take several weeks for garlic to dry at room temperature.

  • You can also dry sliced garlic at room temperature by placing the slices on a cookie sheet and covering them with a dish towel.
