A web host is an individual or a business that hosts websites for others. Web hosts range from small resellers to dedicated server providers. The funds and expertise required for each type of web hosting is different, and the business is very competitive.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Personal computer
  1. Step 1

Log onto the Internet and research web hosting companies. Look at their resale hosting packages, technical support systems, customer service options and prices. Call different web hosts to judge their telephone support or send them email messages to see how long it takes them to respond. Look in web hosting forums such as Webhosting Talk and Webhosting Chat for comments by other resellers. See Resources below for additional information.

  2. Step 2

Decide on a web hosting model for your business. Your options will be reseller, co-location or virtual private servers (VPS) and dedicated servers. Starting as a reseller is most effective if funds are limited and you are not server management-literate. As a reseller web host, your hosting company provides all back-end technical support. You just lease space on their server. VPS web hosts function as resellers except that they receive more space on the server and share it with fewer other hosts. Leasing or owning a dedicated server is the way to go if you know server management and money is not an issue. You get a faster server but you must provide server management and technical support.

  3. Step 3

Decide on a domain name (www.yourname.com) for your business. Research domain names and select one that explains the purpose of your business. The shorter and more memorable the domain name, the better. Register your domain name with a domain register.

  4. Step 4

Sign up for a web hosting account with a provider and pay for their services. Note the username and password provided to you by the web host. You will need them to log onto your account and set up your customers.

  5. Step 5

Build and host a website for your web hosting business. If your web host provides website templates, use them to build your website. If not, hire a web developer to build a website for you announcing your business. Customers will go to this website to sign up for your services.

Tips & Warnings
  • Look for a web hosting provider that accepts over-sells and provides telephone support. If you oversell your allotted server space you want to make sure your customers’ websites won’t be disabled and you want to be able to resolve technical issues for your customers quickly.
  • Starting out as a reseller is cost-effective but you sacrifice independence. If your web host’s servers go down, you are out of business
