How to Make a Perfect House Arrest

Make no mistake about it: house arrest is a form of punishment prescribed by the courts. You do not make a house arrest so much as serve time under house arrest. If you have been arrested and tried for a criminal offense and sentenced to house arrest, as opposed to doing time in the local jail, you’re a lucky person. Nonetheless, you won’t be clubbing with your friends, shopping for hours at the mall or cheering on your favorite team at the stadium for a while. Put your time spent to good use and make it a perfect house arrest.

Take an online class. If you are under house arrest, it’s because you have not been spending your time wisely. Education is a very practical and beneficial use of your time, and since you don’t have outdoors privileges, you might just take a class online. It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to study for your GED or complete a college degree, many classes are available online.

Do community service. Find projects you can do from home and pitch in to make your community a better place. A few ideas: help stop cyber-bullying; make life better for our four-legged companions or take a stand for the environment (see Resources).

Learn a new craft or skill and create something you can give away or donate. Crochet an afghan for a homeless shelter; knit caps for the preemie unit in your local hospital; build a set of bookshelves for the local Boys and Girls Club.

Find some way to make up for your offense. Whatever you did to be sentenced to house arrest, you damaged someone somehow. There must be something you can do to make amends, even if the effort does little more than soothe your soul. Try to find the meaning in your current dilemma and resolve to put purpose in your life to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Reach out. Call your dad or your grandmother and have a good chat. Visit with your sister or a long-lost friend. Spend time caring about other people; take an interest their lives, their cares and their worries. It might put your crime and punishment in an entirely new light.
