Filing a Lien in Missouri
A lien is legal document that allows you to claim a portion of the property if a borrower fails to make payments on the loan used to purchase the property. Filing a lien in Missouri for real estate or other personal property is a relatively simple process, and requires submitting a series of documents to the county recorder’s office. Here’s how to file a lien in Missouri.

Complete the online account registration process. If you are a business, you will need to establish a corporate e-account by completing the ACH registration form; if you are filing as an individual, you will need to establish a personal account to set up a user name and password.

Begin the filing process. You will need to access the filing screen's log-in section and submit your user name and password.

Complete debtor information in Sections 1 and 2 in the initial filing form. This includes the debtor's name, address, type of organization and jurisdiction of the organization.

Complete the secured party's information in Section 3. This will include your name and mailing address.

Describe the collateral in Section 4. This is the financing statement section that describes the property and asset.

Complete Sections 5 through 7 as necessary for the collateral completed in Section 4. This will indicate if there is an alternative designation, whether the filing should be submitted as a real estate record, or if you need additional reports.

Determine if you need to file an "in lieu of continuation" form. This form must be filed for an amendment of an existing filing; release of collateral; assignment of secured party rights; and continuation prior to the standard expiration date.

Submit your application for approval. You can send the information to the Uniform Commercial Code Division online, or print out the completed document to mail it to the Missouri Secretary of State.
