Flip tricks are an important part of any skater's bag of tricks. Kick flip, heel flip, 360-degree kick flip, 180-degree flip, inward flip–there are dozens of ways for a skater to flip a skateboard. If you're interested in flipping skateboards, then you'll probably want to start by learning the kick flip. This is one of the most basic flip tricks and the one that the majority of skateboarders learn first.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skateboard
  • Flat surface
  1. Step 1

Learn to ollie. You have to crawl before you can walk. Like most skate tricks, the kickflip builds on the ollie. Practicing and perfecting the ollie will make mastering flip tricks much easier. An ollie is performed by standing on the board with your back foot on the tail and your front foot behind the front screws. As you jump in the air, slap the tail of the board on the ground to launch the board in the air and slide your front foot forward to level out the deck in midair.

  2. Step 2

Find a flat surface and stand on your skateboard. Place your back foot on the tail and your front foot a little bit behind the bolts of your front truck. Angle your front foot slightly outward and let your heel hang a bit off the board.

  3. Step 3

Pop your board like you are going to ollie. As you go airborne, flick your front foot down and out. If done right, it will cause the board to start flipping.

  4. Step 4

Watch in amazement as the skateboard flips beneath you. Once it has completed one full rotation, catch the board with your feet.

  5. Step 5

Land the kickflip. Ideally, your feet will land on the bolts and you will be leaning slightly forward.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have patience–practice is a big part of learning any skate trick.
  • If you're having trouble, try making slight adjustments to your foot setup.
  • Really work on landing the trick with your feet on the bolts. Stomping down a kickflip with your foot in the middle of the board may result in a cracked board.
