How to Tie a Dropper Line Knot Illustrated

The dropper line knot is great for catching bait or multiple small fish. With this knot, you could fashion a sabiki for a special situation or make a rig for catching several grunts or small snappers on one cast. The dropper length can be varied to suit the needs. Make small droppers and attach pre-made leaders with hooks or make longer drops and tie the hooks directly to the dropper. Practice pulling the knot tight as this part can be tricky to master at first. Add this handy knot to your repertoire by following the illustrated directions below.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    Make an overhand loop.
     
    Make an overhand loop.

    Start the dropper by making an overhand loop where the finished dropper will be located. The length of the dropper will be determined by the size of the loop. The size of the loop will be easier to judge with some practice tying several loops. See illustration Step 1.

  2. Step 2
    Form two loops.
     
    Form two loops.

    Grasp one end of the line and pull it down and under the big loop, forming two loops. See illustration Step 2.

  3. Step 3
    Five to six twists.
     
    Five to six twists.

    Grab the small loop and run it through and around the big loop. Make five to six twists. See illustration Step 3.

  4. Step 4
    Make a new loop.
     
    Make a new loop.

    Pull the top of the big loop through the small loop, forming a new loop. See illustration Step 4.

  5. Step 5
    Pull on both ends to tighten.
     
    Pull on both ends to tighten.

    Pull on both ends of the standing lines at the same time, tightening the coils. Moistening the twists will help them to tighten smoothly. See illustration Step 5.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use caution when tying hooks to droppers.
