How to Make a Silhouette

Silhouettes are timeless classics that have graced walls and jewelry since Victorian times. Although the original silhouettes featured a face in profile, the art has expanded to include flowers, homes, pets or anything with a definitive outline. Creating a silhouette is easier than you think it is. A little preparation and a few supplies are all you need to create a masterpiece of your own.

Things You'll Need

• Photo
• Background paper
• Corresponding size frame
• Black paint
• Glue
• Paintbrush
• Sharp-point tipped scissors or utility knife
• Spray glue

Instructions

1. Use scissors to cut the subject out of the original picture. When cutting, be careful not to blunt the details in the picture such as eyelashes, curls and leaf edging.

2. Place the cut-out picture on a piece of newspaper and paint it black. Use several coats to ensure that the color is uniform.

3. Once the cut-out is dry and you can see what the silhouette will look like in a solid color, use the scissors to play up some of the minor details (like curls) a little more. If you would like to cut out contrasting details on the picture (like earrings, windows, or collars), do so now. Be careful not to compromise the integrity of the image.

4. Cut out the background paper you want to use to the frame size. Carefully glue the silhouette onto the center of the paper. If the paper is not stiff enough to stand in the frame on its own, attach it to some heavy card stock. If needed, lightly mist the finished product with spray glue to keep the edges down.

Tips & Warnings

• Make sure you use a picture that has a good outline or straight profile.

• Most photo developers can make a picture any size you want. When planning what size you want, be sure to take into account an even amount of background color around the silhouette.

• Using rubber-based paint will keep the dried product from cracking as you place it.
