Halloween is one of the most exciting times of year, complete with candy, costumes and pumpkins. If you're looking for a cheap costume idea that's still original, consider going as a hippie. You can make the costume for little money by using things you find in your home, and it allows you to keep warm while looking hip at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a white or tie-dyed T-shirt to wear with your costume. Check a thrift store such as Goodwill for a selection of inexpensive T-shirts. If you want to make your own, buy a white T-shirt and a tie-dye kit and follow the instructions to color the shirt. You can also tie-dye a white cloth headband with the leftover dye to wear around your forehead with your costume.

    • 2

Buy a pair of bell-bottomed or flared blue jeans if you don't already have a pair. If you don't want to spend the money for a pair of jeans, use a regular pair from your wardrobe. Alternatively, you can buy a tie-dyed or wrap-around skirt from Party City for around $20.

    • 3

Buy a cheap vest with fringe and tie beads to it. Party City offers a vest for $20 that is already made, and will not weigh you down. If you already have a brown cloth vest with fringe, take beads and tie the fringe in a knot through the center of the beads. Buy the beads in bright colors such as pink, purple, yellow and green.

Add accessories to your costume. Large plastic sunglasses can be found in vibrant colors at the dollar stores, and an old pair of flip-flops from your wardrobe will save you the trouble of buying shoes. Raid your local Wal-Mart for cheap Halloween makeup to draw peace signs on your face. See the resource section below if you don't know how to make a peace sign. A large necklace with a peace sign or smiley will finish off your costume.

    • 5

Limit makeup to foundation and bright eyeshadow, or go natural and use none at all. Leave your hair loose, and add a couple braids to the front so they hang down beside your face. There's no need for anything fancy; the costume does the work for you.
