How to Draw Anime Clothing Folds

Anime clothing folds are drawn with three simple shapes. When the shapes are combined, they can be used to draw any type of fold. This demo will show you what the three shapes are and where to use them in your drawings.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pencil
  • Paper
  1. Step 1

    Practice drawing the three basic anime fold shapes. They are "V" shapes, "J" shapes and curved lines.

  2. Step 2

    Look at an example of the garment you want to create. Notice where the folds are. Identify each fold as one of the three basic fold shapes.

    Place "V" shapes in places that are very "scrunched," like the armpit of the shirt or the crotch of a pair of pants. They should also come underneath an area of fabric that is curved. One point should be under the start of the curve and one should be at the top of the curve, as shown in the example.

    Place "J" shapes in areas where there are subtle folds in the fabric.

    Draw curved lines beside the other two shapes to complement them or to add definition.
