Things You'll Need:
- Fiber blanket
- Fire extinguisher
-
Step 1
Determine the cause of the fire or the type of fire. There are several things that can cause a fire, and in order to know what to use or what not to use, you should recognize the cause. Several reasons for a fire could be an electrical cause, liquid fire (gasoline or grease), or organic fire (paper, wood, carpet).
-
Step 2
Use a blanket. This will be a safety blanket which is a cloth made of fiber. In cases of a liquid, electric, or an organic fire, using a blanket can help to smother the fire out. This is particular best for a very small fire.
-
Step 3
Throw water on the fire. This is best for an organic fire. Do not try using water for a liquid fire. Throwing water on gas or grease will only enhance the problem.
-
Step 4
Use an ABC fire extinguisher for best results. An ABC fire extinguisher can be used to put all of these types of fires. Otherwise, you will need to buy three separate kinds and know which one to use for the type of fire you have. You must aim at the base of the fire in order to eliminate what originally caused the fire.

Step 5
Call the fire department for large fires. If your house is up in flames, for example, you will need to get out of your home and call the fire department using a neighbor's phone.
