KLR 650 Loaded in Truck

Loading your motorcycle in your truck can be one of the most simple ways to transport it. It is important to do this wisely to prevent accidents and to keep your motorcycle from getting damaged. By using the correct tools, this can be made into a very short process.

Things You'll Need

  • Motorcycle/ATV ramp
  • Wooden plank (if ramp is not available)
  • 2 tie-downs
  • Motorcycle covering (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the truck to a location where the tailgate can be opened and the motorcycle loaded in back. If possible, back the truck up to a bit of a hill. This will make your ramp less steep, and thus better for easy loading.

    • 2

Set up your motorcycle/ATVramp off the tailgate of the truck. Clamp it down if possible. Above all, make sure that it lies firmly and securely. If you do not have a pre-made ramp, you can use a long wooden plank for the same job. Position it as securely as possible.

    • 3

Start the motorcycle, and ride it up the ramp into the bed of the truck. If you are using a wooden plank, it may be helpful to have another person hold the board to keep it from sliding.

    • 4

Reach down and turn off the gas on the motorcycle. This is usually suggested when transporting to prevent gas from leaking.

    • 5

Use standard tie-downs to secure the motorcycle against the rear of the truck's cab. Make sure that the motorcycle is sinched down tightly, and that the suspension is quite compressed.

    • 6

Cover the motorcycle as desired for transport.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use sinching tie-downs rather than jacking tie-downs for easier securing.

  • Be careful of pinch points when working around the motorcycle's suspension and tie-downs.
