      Take the state-mandated class. Prospective real estate agents in New York State must complete a 75-hour course, which covers the laws, regulations and rules for realtors in New York. The class is administered by local boards of the New York Association of Realtors and information about local boards is available online at the agency's website.

      Find a sponsoring broker. In New York State, you must have a brokerage sponsor your application for a real estate license. Obtaining a sponsorship shows the state you have obtained a position with a real estate agency and ensures that you will have a place to work once you receive your license.

      Apply for the state exam. Once you pass the 75-hour course, you have to receive your license from the State of New York. In New York State, licensing for professions is handled by the Department of State. Visit the state's real estate licensing page and apply online.

      Qualify to take the state exam. In order to take the state licensing exam, you must be 18 years old or older, have a sponsor broker, complete the 75-hour course and must not be more than four months in arrears in child support payments. Once you meet those qualifications, you are allowed to register for the test. The state exam costs $50 and is non-refundable in the case that you fail the exam.
