Apply your top coat of paint to the furniture. Don't use a gloss paint because it will not crackle as well. The more paint you apply to the wood, the more crackles you will get. Try to avoid painting over the same area twice as this may fill in the cracks with the top coat paint.

Apply a clear coat of shellac to keep the wood furniture and the crackle finish safe from spills and everyday damage. You may have to wait up to 2 weeks before you apply the shellac as the furniture needs several days to cure to bring out all the cracks.
