Step 1
Buy some wick. The wick is the ‘cord’ that you see in the middle of the candle and the portion you set aflame when you want to light a candle. Cut the wick you have picked out to a desired length. If you are making multiple candles at once, cut multiple wicks.
-
Step 2
Pick out the wax. Many craft stores have great wax kits that you can choose from; you can choose plain wax, colored wax, or scented wax. For this project however, it is usually best to use plain, unscented wax, especially if you are going for a vintage feel.
-
Step 3
Melt the wax. Follow the directions on the package of whatever wax you chose to use; just make sure that the wax you bought allows you to melt the wax in some kind of pot on the stove.
-
Step 4
Dip the wick. Once the wax has melted to a proper consistency (again, check the package) take one of the wicks that you cut and dip it into the wax, leaving about an inch of un-waxed wick at the top. Allow it to cool for about 30 seconds. Dip the wick with the now light wax coating into the hot wax again.
-
Step 5
Repeat step four until your wick is covered in the amount of wax you desire. You can make your candles as thin or thick as you want.
-
Step 6
Let your newly made candles cool by hanging them up in a undisturbed place by the top of their un-waxed wick. Let them cool for a good 24 hours before taking them down.
-
Step 7
After taking your candles down from drying, they are ready to be used.

on 10/23/2008 I just saw this last weekend at our local Apple Butter Festival. Pretty cool way how to make candles. I guess it can really make a nice gift ... definitely better than something bought at Meijer's or Walmart.
