Dresses are as popular as ever for the upcoming season and will take center stage around holiday time. Here are some of the best 2009 winter clothing trends for dresses.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Purple.

If choose one color of dress to give your wardrobe a lift, make it purple. Purple in all of its incarnations is one of the hottest colors for winter 2009. Don't be so quick to think you can't wear it. There's a purple for almost everyone in shades ranging from eggplant, plum, to softer shades of lavender. Purple is the color of royalty and that's what you'll feel like when you slip this regal shade onto your body. Experiment and find the shade that's right for you. You'll feel good every time you slip it on.

  2. Step 2

    Floral patterns.

Although florals may not come to mind when the temperatures drop and snow is on the ground, but slipping on a vibrant floral may just what's needed to lift your spirits on a frosty winter day. This winter's floral prints are deep in color with a richness and texture not seen with lighter summer florals. Think deep purples, burgundies, and dark reds in heavier, textured fabrics. For contrast pair a fresh floral dress in deep berry shades with a faux leather jacket and a pair of matching knee high boots for a casual look. Then dress up the same floral for work with a pair of opaque hose or tights and heels. Be sure to add one floral dress to your wardrobe this winter. You'll quickly discover how fun and versatile it can be.

  3. Step 3

    The one-shoulder dress.

Just in time for the holiday season comes the one shoulder dress. You won't resemble Wilma and Betty from the Flinestones when you slip on this year's elegant little numbers in luscious, soft fabrics. They're subtly sexy without being too revealing and are the perfect choice for upcoming holiday parties and celebrations. Worn with heels and a dressy evening clutch bag, they make a sexy, yet elegant statement. Consider purchasing one in dove gray, cream, classic black, or one of the rich berry shades for evening.

  4. Step 4

    The strapless dress.

A strapless dress may not sound like the most practical option for winter wear, but with a few modifications, it can go from evening to the office. Buy one in basic black or in winter's newest color, purple. Wear it to your holiday parties with strappy heels and glitzy jewelry then tone it down for work by covering it with a fitted blazer or belted cardigan. This little classic can quickly become a staple in your wardrobe.

  5. Step 5

    Embellished dresses.

Dresses for holiday evening wear will have extra touches of glitz this year. Some commonly seen embellishments include sequins, beads, faux fur accents, and lace. You'll see dresses accented with lace sleeves and necklines creating a soft, sexy feminine look. These dresses are best worn with simple accessories and shoes to avoid looking overdone.
