A bridge kickover is one of the basic skills learned in gymnastics, right after the bridge, of course. It isn't necessary to be able to fall back into a bridge in order to do a bridge kickover. In this article, you will learn how to do a bridge kickover.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a mat or equivalent
  • ability to perform a bridge (by either falling back or pushing up)
  1. Step 1

The bridge kickover begins in the bridge position. It doesn't matter whether you fall back into your bridge, or if you push up to a bridge, (however falling back is preferable). Step one is to get into a bridge position.

  2. Step 2

The second step to a bridge kickover is to push one foot off the ground. This foot will be your dominant foot.

  3. Step 3

Push your nondominant foot off the ground. Your legs should be in a split in the air.

  4. Step 4

Land on your dominant foot first, then allow your nondominant foot to follow.

  5. Step 5

Push your hands off the floor, and keep them next to your ears as you stand upright.

Tips & Warnings
  • Although a bridge kickover can be started either by falling back into a bridge or by pushing up to a bridge, it is preferable to start by falling back into a bridge.
  • Keep your arms straight at all times; doing otherwise may cause head and/or neck injuries.
  • Once your feet come off the ground, your legs should be straight and your toes should be pointed.
  • Push through your hips in order to not "leave your hips behind".
  • Do NOT try this alone. Always have a coach and/or someone who knows what they're doing to spot you.
  • Neck and/or head injuries can occur with this skill; practice wisely.
