How to Buy a Monthly NJ Transit Train Pass

When I first started commuting to New York City with the NJ Transit Train, I was a little confused about the monthly pass system. The ticket office at the station from which I commute is closed at 8am when I get to the station, and the NJ Transit website is vague about how to buy a monthly pass. Here's a little help to make your morning commute a little easier:

Things You'll Need:

Cash or a Credit Card
A NJ Transit Train station
Your Commuting Self

Step 1

Find a NJ Transit ticket machine on located either side of the train tracks. In some larger stations like those in Secaucus or Hoboken, ticket machines are located in the waiting area.
Step 2

Select your language preference. Next, select "NJT Rail."
Step 3

Destination numbers are listed for every station on every machine. Type in the destination number for the station at which you need to arrive.
Step 4

Select "One Way Adult," "One Way Child" or "Senior/Disabled." Although the ticket says "one way," monthly passes can be used both ways. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY TWO MONTHLY PASSES. Silly!
Step 5

Select the number of tickets you need.
Step 6

Pay.
Step 7

Wait for your ticket and receipt.
Step 8

Now, Take that Train!

You only need to show this pass to the conductor when he/she asks for your ticket, and you're ready to go.

Tips & Warnings

You can buy a NJ Transit Monthly Pass beginning on the 20th of the previous month. Therefore, you can only buy one monthly pass at a time.
Your ticket will have a zone number on it. This means that you can travel a certain distance with the pass, (in other words, a certain amount of zones). Therefore, if you are taking a different route one day, ask the conductor if your pass for your daily commute will get you there, and/or pay the difference.
