Have a light fixture with an outdated finish? Or, find a bargain that needs a little TLC? Don't despair! Follow these simple instructions to learn how to change the finish of a light fixture.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

If this is an installed fixture, it must be removed. Safety first! Turn off the power to the fixture. Unwire the fixture, and take it to a dust free painting area.

  2. Step 2

Remove any pieces that are not to be refinished such as glass globes, bulbs, shades, and crystals. Disassemble accessory pieces to be sprayed separately such as canopy covers, finishing nuts, chain.

  3. Step 3

For best adhesion, use steel wool on any slick surfaces. If the fixture is going to be hung in an area where it will not be disturbed such as an overhead bathroom vanity, this may not be necessary.

  4. Step 4

Use painter' s tape to seal off sockets, wires, and other areas which should not be exposed to paint.

  5. Step 5

Use spray paint suited for the type of material to be painted. For instance, the fixture in the photo was a brushed nickel metal finish. It was refinished with a Tuscan oil rubbed bronze spray suitable for metal applications.

  6. Step 6

Allow fixture to dry thoroughly. Recoat if necessary until desired look is achieved.

  7. Step 7

With power off, rehang fixture. Be careful not to scrape finish during installation. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Use light sweeping strokes when spraying. This will ensure a smooth finish without drip marks or bubbles.
  • Allow hanging fixtures to hang while spraying for easiest paint coverage. Chain can also be sprayed in light layers.
  • Follow manufacturer's recommended drying time before reinstalling.
  • Always be sure power is turned off when working around electricity.
  • Thoroughly tape off any openings or sockets to avoid ruining the connections.
  • Paint in a well ventilated area. Wear a mask to prevent inhalation.
  • Protect surrounding area from overspray.
