Crackers can help settle your stomach.
Crackers can help settle your stomach.

Once motion sickness sets in, there is no "cure," and the afflicted can suffer for hours on end. But you can learn to prevent it, to avoid the nausea and dizziness the plagues so many travelers.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • bland food such as crackers, dry toast, rice
  • prescription anti-nausea medication for severe cases
  • patience
  1. Step 1

When you're suffering from motion sickness, via boat travel, car rides or air sickness, your condition can be impossible to reverse. So with these methods, you can alleviate the need to take Dramamine or other medications that can cause drowsiness during your travels.

First, ask your physician about non-drowsy medications that you can take with you, just in case.

  2. Step 2

Then, try the natural approach to reducing motion sickness. Powdered ginger capsules can help....take these about a half-hour before you depart on your trip.

  3. Step 3

Also, don't travel on an empty stomach. Have a light, bland easily digestible meal before you leave. A few crackers can work wonders.

  4. Step 4

Avoid alcohol before and during a journey.

  5. Step 5

Don't read in a car or bus because this can add to nausea. Instead, look at the horizon.

  6. Step 6

Position yourself in the most stable areas of a vehicle, near the driver on a bus, toward the front of an aircraft or train, and in the front seat of a car or van.

  7. Step 7

Proper ventilation helps prevent motion sickness too, so open a car window or turn on the air conditioner if possible.

  8. Step 8

Use the overhead vent in a train or bus, or on an aircraft.

  9. Step 9

If you feel the early symptons of motion sickness - dizziness, quickened pulse and respiration, a general feeling of discomfort - lie flat if possible with your eyes closed, breathe deeply and let your body flow with the motion.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your condition worsens, call a physician or ask someone next to you to do so.
