Tell Preschoolers the Story of the Pumpkin Mouse House

Here's a cute, quick story that doubles as a "magic trick" (through the eyes of a preschooler anyway).

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Orange paper
  1. Step 1

Fold a sheet of orange paper in half (the wide way).

  2. Step 2

Cut the paper so that it is half of a pumpkin shape, including the stem. The fold should be in the middle of the pumpkin.

  3. Step 3

Now you're ready to invite your audience over and begin your story as follows:

Once, there was a little mouse who was looking for a house. He was exploring in a garden, when he saw a perfect pumpkin, lying on its side. (Walk your fingers over to the pumpkin). This looks like it would be a wonderful house! thought the mouse. So, he nibbled a door, and let himself in.

  4. Step 4

Tear a small hole into the middle of the folded edge of the pumpkin (say, "nibble, nibble, nibble" as you do it). Walk your fingers to the "door" to show that the mouse went inside.

Then, the little mouse said, "This house is wonderful, but it certainly is dark in here! I think I need some windows."

  5. Step 5

Tear a small hole closer to the stem, but not through the fold (you will need to tear through both layers of the paper for this step).

"That's much better," said the mouse. "I can't wait to invite my friends over for a visit. I don't think that they'll all be able to fit through my little door though, so I will make a bigger door."

  6. Step 6

Tear a long piece from the fold upward. ("Nibble, nibble, nibble.")

When the door was ready, the mouse invited all of his friends over.

  7. Step 7

When his friends arrived, the mouse said, "Happy Halloween!" (open the paper up to show the jack o'lantern face).

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to keep the pumpkin on its side throughout the story, so that the children won't be able to guess what you're doing.
