Allot time for completing this task. Feng Shui is a practice that is supposed to help you feel more calm and balanced. Making the decision to reduce or eliminate the clutter in your home, and then committing yourself to staying focused on this task, are your first steps in the right direction towards overcoming your clutter addiction. Examine the items you own with a critical eye. If you do not use them, don't need them and don't love them, they are only serving to take up space which can slow down the Chi in your home. Donate what you can to those in need and discard what can't be sold or given away. The less items you have to deal with, the less cluttered your space will be and the easier it will be to organize your home.

Avoid stacking items on top of each other. According to Feng Shui beliefs, this can negatively affect the energy flow in the space. If you have stacks of paper piling up in your home, place them in a file folder and tuck them away to be grabbed as needed. If you have piles of books throughout your room, place them in a bookcase for better organization.

Divide your items into categories. For example, placing your clothing in one pile, books in another, pictures and mementos in another and so on until you have established an inventory of what you own. Once you have created these categories, you can determine the best storage options for these items. For items you rarely if ever use, find storage in areas that you do not frequently use, such as a basement or attic. The less items stored inside the home, the more open it will feel and the better the energy can transfer from space to space.
