How to Get the Smell Out of Your Front-Load Washer

How to Get the Smell Out of Your Front-Load Washerthumbnail
Some front-loading washers require special high-energy, concentrated detergent.

Front-loading washers are have a door on the front as opposed to one on the top of the machine like older, traditional washers, and do not have agitators. Although they tend to be more expensive than standard washers, front-loading washers are popular choices among homeowners because they use less water and electricity. One problem with many front-loaders is the presence of a musty smell. This problem stems from the fact that they tend to retain water around the front door seal, which leads to the growth of mold and mildew.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • White vinegar or bleach
    • Cleaning sponge
      • 1

Wet a cleaning sponge with bleach. If you prefer to use a more gentle cleaner, wet the sponge with white vinegar.

      • 2

Open the washer's door and wipe around the front door seal gasket with the cleaning sponge. This is the area that is most likely to retain water. Bleach or vinegar will kill mold and mildew.

      • 3

Soak a white towel with bleach or vinegar and run it through a wash cycle in your machine.

      • 4

Leave the washer's door open after each wash to help any remaining moisture to dry.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Wear protective gloves when handling bleach, and use the product in a well-ventilated area.

    • Do not leave the washer door open if you have small children or pets who may climb inside.
