find jeans that fit.
find jeans that fit.

Finding jeans that fit you perfectly can take tons of time and effort. Here are some tips to help you find them quickly and easily.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

You know when you try on jeans in the store and they fit perfectly, only to wear them and the next day they seem one size larger? Premium denim is tightly weaved, and this helps to prevent the denim from stretching out and sagging. Premium denim comes at a cost, but you can get them cheaper at sites like bluefly.com, or at sample sales like Gilt Groupe or Hautelook. For invitations to these sample sale sites, please see my article: How to find discount designer fashion. Also, stores like Kohls are starting to sell premium denim such as Seven and Vigoss for about $50 a pair.

  2. Step 2

Take a look at the wash. Darker washes have a slimming effect, and lighter colors will accentuate thighs. Also, avoid too much whiskering or fading in any place you don't want to be accentuated, like the fronts of your thighs or your backside.

  3. Step 3

If you have a fuller belly, choose a wide waistband. If you want a skinnier waistband, check to make sure it doesn't create a "muffin top" effect. Also, the slope of the waistband is very important. Look for jeans that the waistband slopes down in the front and is higher in the back. Low rise in the front gives a very flattering look, and more coverage in the back will prevent showing your underwear when you bend over. Aim for the front rise (crotch length) to be below your belly button for the most flattering look.

  4. Step 4

A slightly flared hem is the most flattering style on all body types. It balances out the hips which, for most women, are the widest part of them.

  5. Step 5

The placement and size of the back pockets can flatter your rear as long as they are large and centered. Pockets that are small or wide apart make your rear look wider.

  6. Step 6

If you have wider hips, make sure that the front pockets are not the side slanted kind (see picture), because they can bunch open and widen your hips. Choose jeans with the standard kind of front pockets.

  7. Step 7

Get them in a long length if you normally wear shoes with heels...they'll make your legs look much longer.
