Plan ahead if possible. If you can, try to know what your dates are and have at least 6 weeks to look around for a good deal. This is especially important for the holiday season!

Look online to find great coupons and promo codes for individual companies, but don't over look companies like travelocity and orbitz as they have codes as well

Sign up for the rental car companies ezines and offers. I have received some awesome deals that you normally wouldn't find online because they emailed them out exclusively to members.

Use your association to get discounts. From the AAA to costco to groups and organizations in-between, a 10, 15, or 20% discount is one great way to keep the cost down.

Go to websites that have built in discounts. One that I find very popular to save cash at is Rentalcarmomma.com. Using the Alamo section of this site, you will save quite a bit of cash!
