How to Knit A Simple Baby Blanket

Baby blankets can be worked to any size and style.

A baby blanket is an ideal gift for a baby shower, new arrival or birthday, or as a donation to a children's charity. Baby blankets are an ideal first project for beginners and also can be crafted in no time by the more experienced knitter. Best of all, they only require the most basic knitting skills of casting on, knit, purl and binding off.

Things You'll Need

• 7 skeins/1050 yards of double knit yarn
• U.S. size 6, 4mm knitting needles
• Tapestry needle

Instructions

1. Cast on 150 stitches using your desired cast-on method. Knit every row for the first five rows.

2. Start the pattern. Knit the first row. For the second row, knit the first five stitches, purl to the last five, knit the last five stitches.

3. Work the pattern. Repeat these alternating knit and purl rows until your work measures 34 inches.

4. Finish the blanket. Knit five rows and bind off. Weave in any loose ends using the tapestry needle.

Tips & Warnings

• For an easier project, knit the entire blanket in garter stitch (knit every row).

• Add color by alternating between two colored yarns every 10 rows.

• Count your stitches at the end of each row to prevent any mistakes.
