This will explain how to pick and carve a very exotic and realistic looking pumpkin.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large clay ribbon loop
  • midium clay ribbon loop
  • small clay ribbon loop
  • exacto knife
  • paring knife
  1. Step 1

Firts of all you will need to get a pumpkin. Get one that is heavier than it looks. This will ensure that it has good thick walls for carving. I try to get ones that are not perfectly round, I have thought that this helps with the facaial features.

  2. Step 2

Shave off the side of the pumpkin you are going to be working with using the large clay ribbon loop. Try to just shave off the skin leaving a white surface.

  3. Step 3

Use the large clay ribbon loop to cut out the areas that are going to be the deepest facial features, such as eye sockets and between the nose and lips. From there you should be able to do a "rough carving". Carve all of the facial features.

  4. Step 4

The medium clay ribbon will be used for carving out areas such as the inside of the mouth.

  5. Step 5

Use the small loop to carve out real fine and hard to reach areas like eyes, or stiches.

  6. Step 6

The knifes will be used to carve detail lines around the mouth, and other areas. This is the most important part of the whole thing. If the lines do not look good, the pumpkin will not look good.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your time and do not be afraid to mess up. You will go through A LOT of pumpkins trying to get it right
  • Everyone will find their own ways of doing things. If you find a way that works better with these tools, by all means, do it that way. This is just the best way i have found to do it.
  • Be careful, all tools you will be working with are very sharp.
