Every parent wants to make sure that the toys their child plays with are safe. Here are some tips to make shopping for safe toys a little easier.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • only a little extra time to do the research

Consider the age and ability of the child you are buying for. A one year old child who regularly puts things in his mouth is different than a seven year old who know not to put things in her mouth.

  2. Step 2

Avoid painted, plastic toys unless you are absolutely sure they do not contain lead-based paint. Try to avoid any toy labeled as "Made in China," especially for a child under age four. Purchase toys "Made in the USA" or European made toys instead.

  3. Step 3

It is hard to avoid all potentially harmful toys due to children receiving gifts from others. Here's my advice, call the manufacturer. If they cannot guarantee that the toy does not contain lead than discard the toy. It is not worth the risk. My son received a plastic toddler bed from his grandparents and before I ever opened the package I called the company and grilled them about the product. Luckily, it was made in the USA and I was guaranteed there was no lead in the product.

  4. Step 4

Try some of the links below to help you find safe toys for your family.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read the label to see where the toy was manufactured. Remember, the location of the company is not necessarily where the toy was made.
  • The above is simply my personal opinion. There are many brands out there. I am not advising any particular one. The parent is the only one who can determine what is safe or not for their own child.
