Things You'll Need:
- only a little extra time to do the research
-
Step 1
Baby with a Toy in the Mouth courtesy of www.ens-newswire.comConsider the age and ability of the child you are buying for. A one year old child who regularly puts things in his mouth is different than a seven year old who know not to put things in her mouth.
-
Step 2
Avoid painted, plastic toys unless you are absolutely sure they do not contain lead-based paint. Try to avoid any toy labeled as "Made in China," especially for a child under age four. Purchase toys "Made in the USA" or European made toys instead.
-
Step 3
It is hard to avoid all potentially harmful toys due to children receiving gifts from others. Here's my advice, call the manufacturer. If they cannot guarantee that the toy does not contain lead than discard the toy. It is not worth the risk. My son received a plastic toddler bed from his grandparents and before I ever opened the package I called the company and grilled them about the product. Luckily, it was made in the USA and I was guaranteed there was no lead in the product.
