Make a Witch Hat for Halloween

How to make a witch hat to complement your costume. Make a large and creepy or small and elegant hat with newspaper, masking tape and paint. Perfect for halloween.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Spread three sheets of newspaper on the floor and roll into a cone. Try on until you like the size. You can have a huge hat or cut it down into a smaller hat if you want a more traditional witch look. Secure with masking tape and cut the edges even so it will stand on its own.

  2. Step 2

For the brim lay out three more sheets of newspaper. Place the cone in the center and trace the size of it onto the newspaper with a pen. Mark the center of the circle and cut from the center to the edge about twenty times like the spokes of a wheel.

  3. Step 3

Stick the crown of the hat through this opening and tape into place. The paper wedges will be sticking up around the crown of the hat. tape them into place with a circle of masking tape around the cone. It will look like a hat with a rectangular brim. roll and crumple the edges or the brim toward the center until it is round and the brim is no longer floppy. Secure with tape. Be generous with the tape.

  4. Step 4

If you want an old crumpled look fold the crown once or twice to get a zig-zag effect. This is good for a funny halloween witch costume.

  5. Step 5

Spray paint the hat and decorate as you choose. You can add a hat band of colored paper and a buckle of aluminum foil. Spider webs and spiders look good. If you want a pretty witch hat drape it with some of the pretty sparkly and sheer halloween fabric that is now available. and add trailing ribbons. You can use fabric which matches your costume.

Tips & Warnings
  • When taping the brim on use pieces of tape about an inch long to create a smoother look.
  • Spray paint in a box to protect the surrounding areas.
  • An orange band looks good on a halloween witch hat.
  • Use spray paint only in a well ventilated area away from open flame.
