Rat trap. You can buy these at your local store for a couple bucks (your local Walmart or your Home Depot will carry these). There are a variety of choices that include poison, sticky traps, and the classic snap trap. I would recommend you use the snap trap. The poison pellets can be a danger to your children and pets. Sticky traps work on occasion, but the classic trap is the best. If you do not know how big your rat is, just be safe and get the largest one you find. Remember to get a couple of these. There are humane rat traps for those who dislike killing animals. Check with your local store.

Call pest control. Depending on your area, pest control will do a variety of things. There initial step is to set up their own traps. If they feel there is an infestation, they will see the rats in their hole and poison them. Pest control will take care of the rats further. If you live in an apartment, call your landlord and they can assist you in this problem.

Seal your food. Don't leave your food lying around. Rats can make their way around your kitchen. They will not only eat your food, but will also defecate and urinate on your food. This can have fatal consequences to your family. Buy containers to put things such as rice and cereal. Many containers are meant to be rat proof.
