How to Become a Better Speller

Spelling does not come easy to everyone. Sometimes a person has to work at becoming a better speller. Being a better speller can make your writing more intelligent and make it easier and quicker for you to write. Here are some ways that you can become a better speller.

• Dictionary
• Pen and paper
• Computer

1. Check the correct pronunciation of each word you are attempting to spell in a dictionary. Knowing the correct way to pronounce a word is important to remembering its spelling.

2. Before you close the dictionary, practice spelling the word. Do this by looking away from the dictionary page and trying to visualize the word in your mind. Write the word on a piece of paper or type it on the computer. Check the spelling with the dictionary to see if you are correct. Repeat the process until you are able to spell the word correctly.

3. Learn some spelling rules, such as i before e except after c. Becoming familiar with spelling rules will help you to spell most of the words in the English language better. But remember, there are exceptions to every rule.

4. Make a list of the most common words that you misspell. You can keep a worksheet on your computer or make a hand written list. Keep this as a reference on how to spell the words correctly and every so often, select 5-10 words from the list and try to spell them without looking at the list.

5. Write often. Practice is the best way to learn.
