Tired of the messy store bought silver cleaners that cost a fortune? Why not make your own? It's easy, economical and safe for the environment.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 T Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • Boiling Water
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Glass Dish
  1. Step 1

Place a piece of aluminum foil (shiny side up) in a glass dish, such as a 9x13 glass baking dish.

  2. Step 2

Place your silver jewelry pieces on top of the aluminum foil and cover the jewelry with boiling water. Be careful that you don't splash the hot water on yourself.

  3. Step 3

Add 2 Tablespoons of Baking Soda and 1 teaspoon of Salt to the hot water. Soak silver jewelry pieces for 30 minutes. You will, almost immediately, see how the chemical reaction of the foil, baking soda and salt magically make the tarnish disappear.

  4. Step 4

Using salad tongs, remove the silver jewelry from the hot water. You can also just drain the jewelry into a colander. Rinse the jewelry with sudsy water, dry and buff with a soft cloth. Voila!! Your silver looks beautiful!

on 11/6/2009 I am a chef and I have used almost every type of silver cleaner and methods of cleaning silver. This process does remove tarnish but on silver plate, it will eventually remove the silver plating as well. I know! My restaurant has used Silvermate liquid silver cleaner for years and it is, by far, the easiest and safest way to clean any type of silver, sterling or silver plate. It cleans off tarnish in less than 30 seconds and leaves a polish on as well. It is non-hazardous and is over 95% water. Their website is www.silvermatecompany.com if you are interested. i just love the product!

on 9/16/2009 This works really well on silver. I just did all my jewelry, and, to see if it would work, I tried it on some costume jewelry as well. DO NOT use this method on costume jewelry with glue set stones - I lost a necklace and earring set I've had for five years because it made the sets come out (my bad, but I thought I'd try it). Otherwise, it works great!
