Step 1
Trim your hair regularly. Processing, styling, and even brushing can damage hair over time. Your hair will usually show this damage first as split ends. Have your hair trimmed every 2 months to get rid of damaged dry ends.
-
Step 2
Don't shampoo every day. Unless you have a very oily scalp, most people do not need to shampoo daily as this can strip natural oils and cause drying. The natural oils in your hair help protect and moisturize your hair.
-
Step 3
Rinse with cold water. After shampooing or conditioning, rinse your hair with cold or cool water to seal in the conditioner and smooth the hair shaft.
-
Step 4
Avoid over-drying your hair. It's best to let your hair dry naturally as often as possible. If you do blow-dry on a regular basis, stop drying the hair while it's still slightly damp. This will help prevent heat damage.
-
Step 5
Use a deep conditioner 2 or 3 times a week. To treat dry frizzy hair, leave the conditioner in for at least 30 minutes and rinse with cool water.
-
Step 6
Apply leave-in conditioner after you shampoo. For exceptionally dry hair, you can use leave-in conditioner after your regular conditioner. Your hair will soak it up like a sponge.
-
Step 7
Use styling products that promote shine and smoothing as well as manageability. If you have curly hair, opt for water based products that will work with your curls.
-
Step 8
Protect your hair from the sun. Hats are a good choice and will prevent the sun from drying your hair, but they aren't always feasible. Use a sunscreen made especially for hair.
