Commercial cleaning solutions are effective for cleaning glass, but there are many traditional mixtures that work just as well. Problems arise with streaking, so using detergent by itself is not advisable. Clean rags, an inexpensive washing solution and some newspapers are all you need to do the job right. Here are a few different concoctions you can mix together to make your own window cleaner. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Ammonia
  • Dish detergent
  • Water
  • Vinegar
  • Lemon juice
  • Cornstarch

Instructions

    • 1

      Mix 1/4 cup of vinegar and 1 tsp. of liquid dish detergent into 1 gallon of water. Pour into a spray bottle or use directly from the bucket.

      Combine 2 cups of 70 percent isopropyl rubbing alcohol, 1/2 cup of ammonia and 1 tsp.of liquid detergent. Mix in enough water to make one gallon of cleaner.

      Mix 1/4 cup of vinegar, 2 tbsps. of lemon juice and 1 tbsp. of liquid dish detergent into 1 gallon of water.

      Mix 1 part vinegar and 4 parts water in a spray bottle. You can mix 1 cup of strong tea with 3 tbsps. of vinegar in a spray bottle as well.

      Mix 2 cups of water with 3 tbsps. of vinegar and then add a dash of liquid dish detergent.

      Dissolve 2 tbsps. of cornstarch into 1 gallon of warm water. Add 1/2 cup of ammonia and 1/2 cup of vinegar. Mix thoroughly and use right from the bucket.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dry windows with crumpled up newspapers to remove streaks. Wash one side of the window side to side and the other up and down so you can see which side is streaked.

  • Don't clean windows when they are in bright sunlight.
