Traditional Irish Soda Bread is just the right comfort food any time of year! Not just for St. Patrick's Day, enjoy it fresh out of the oven on cool, crisp Fall days, or bake up a batch on a snowy morning! Easy to make in multiple batches, this crowd pleaser is made with Buttermilk to give it a rich taste and texture.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 9 Cups All Purpose Flour
  • 3-1/3 Cup sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon Baking Soda
  • 2 Tablespoons Baking Powder
  • 2 Tablespoons Caraway Seeds
  • 2 Cups Raisins (or Currents)
  • 6 Eggs
  • 1 Cup melted butter or vegetable shortening
  • 2 Cups Sour Cream
  • 1 Cup Buttermilk
  1. Step 1

    Mix or sift together: Flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, baking powder and caraway seeds. Stir in raisins (or currents)

  2. Step 2

    In a second bowl, with a wire whisk, beat together: Eggs, butter, sour cream and buttermilk.

  3. Step 3

    Combine the two mixtures, stirring just until moistened: do not over mix.

  4. Step 4

    Turn dough into three (3) greased and floured bread loaf pans.

    Bake at 350 degrees about 1 hour.

Tips & Warnings
  • Makes 3 loafs.
  • Can be frozen.
