Step 1
Dust mites are in all our homes. That is because they feed voraciously on the dead skin cells that are continuously shed by the human body.
Dust mites collect in carpets and furniture but especially around bedding. This is because our bedding is generally warm and slightly moist, conditions favourable to mite feeding and reproducing.
It is a protein within the droppings of the dust mites that cause problems for those who suffer from allergies. -
Step 2
It is probably impossible to eliminate dust mites completely but there are ways to control them.
Do not sweep as this merely spreads them into the air where they will merely move on to another location.
Instead vacuum regularly. Treat your carpets with a commercial product that kills the mites. You can then vacuum up both mites and their allergic waste. Change the vacuum bag often.
Clean your carpets, at least annually, with power equipment. this can be rented.
Keep drapes and curtains washed and dust-free.
If an individual is highly allergic and suffers from asthma, it is preferable that there are no carpets in the bedroom and that the windows are covered by curtains that can be regularly washed in hot water. -
Step 3
To control mites in the bedroom, where they are most prevalent, do not use cotton pillows.
You can purchase pillows that stand up well to washing and are hypo-allergenic,
Wash your bedding in hot water at least once a week. Cold water will not kill mites.
Keep all surfaces, clean, dry, and dust free.
Dust mites have no natural enemies so it is up to you to control them withn your home.
