You can make your own caramel apples and homemade caramel with this easy to follow recipe. Great year round and a fun project for the whole family. Follow the instructions below and experiment with different toppings and apple varieties to come up with your own personal favorite.

You may never want to buy the store bought variety again once you discover how to make caramel apples and your own caramel. Here's how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8 medium sized firm apples
  • 8 wooden sticks - buy at your local party supply or grocery store. (You can use popsicle sticks or bamboo skewers with excess cut off)
  • Candy Thermometer
  • Saucepan or pot
  • Waxed paper (to put finished apples on)
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  1. Step 1

    Wash and dry the apples. Remove stems and insert skewer sticks to make handles for the caramel apples. If using popsicle sticks, carefully insert a knife into the apple where you want the stick to go in.

  2. Step 2

    To make the caramel put butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, canned milk and vanilla in a saucepan over medium high heat and stir to combine. Bring to a boil until mixture reaches 248 degrees fahrenheit which is the firm ball stage on a candy thermometer. Remove from heat.

  3. Step 3

    Holding the wooden stick, dip the apples into the caramel coating mixture. You may need to swirl the apples around and tilt the pan to coat the apples completely. Try and work quickly as the coating will begin to harden. If mixture thickens or cools too much, reheat briefly before proceeding.

  4. Step 4

    If desired, quickly dip coated caramel apple in optional toppings, or sprinkle them over apple before coating hardens. Place coated apples with stick pointing skyward onto waxed paper. Completely cool before serving.

    Experiment with these optional topping ideas for your caramel apples:

    * Candy Corn
    * Shredded Coconut
    * M&M's
    * Chopped Nuts
    * Chocolate Chips
    * Candy Sprinkles

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose firm tart apples: Granny Smith, Braeburn, and Fuji are good choices. Red and Delicious apples are usually too soft skinned.
  • Try and find apples that have not been coated in wax as this may prevent candy coating from sticking to apples. If you can only find waxed apples, wash them under lukewarm water and scrub lightly with vegetable brush or washcloth.
  • Use caution as candy mixture is hot
  • Children should always be supervised by an adult
  • Only use food grade sticks for your apples
