Step 1
Before going outdoors, check the weather to see what it is going to be like. It is best to keep emergency items in your car, just in case the weather turn ugly quickly.

If you have to be outdoors, be sure to wear a warm hat on your head, cover your neck, wear gloves and wear layers of warm clothing. Wear socks with your shoes to keep your feet warm. Wear an appropriate shoes for that type of weather.

The type of food that you eat is also important. During this time you burn more calories in order to keep you warm. Eat a nutritious well balanced meal, to help generate body heat and prevent hypothermia.

Make sure that inside your home is at a comfortable temperature. Extra precaution should be taken, if there are babies or elderly people living in your home. Keep your thermostat at 70 degrees and up, depending on how cold the house is, to prevent hypothermia.

When you are leaving the home bring some extra clothing for emergency. If clothing should get wet, immediately change into a dry set of clothing.
