Add Solar On A Tight Budget
Add Solar On A Tight Budget

Solar can be added to a home without hurting a tight budget. In fact, adding solar to a home may secure a tight budget in a society when electric bills will only increase.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check out the grants and rebates available to you in your community for help in greening your home. In most cases this can lower the bill by 1/3. These grants can be found through green organizations and government sites such as grants.gov.

  2. Step 2

Consider taking out a home equity loan to install solar panals in your home. Consult professionals to ensure that your home is a good fit for solar power and determine monthly costs. In most cases the monthly cost is the same as paying a monthly electric bill but will not increase in cost with time. A solar system will usually ad a 10% to a house, this will safe guard you if you decide you need to sell your house later on.

  3. Step 3

Do your research in what is best suited for your home and budget. Consider not going totally off the power grid. Instead, have your extra energy go into a battery it can go back to the grid. This will allow your meter to go backward and in turn you can use energy of the grid when needed.

  4. Step 4

Rent a solar system with no up front cost to you. Many business will come to you home and install a solar system. Some charge by the month and some charge by your usage. Many companies offer a set rate for up to 25 years. While the rate will most likely not be lower then your utility bill now, it will most likely be in the very near future.

Tips & Warnings
  • Solar can be added to a home in a tasteful manner, the days of ugly solar panels in the front yard are gone.
  • Not all homes will be well suited for solar energy.

on 1/20/2009 Be sure to check on any restrictions before adding solar powers to a home in an area that has a homeowners association (HOA). Not all HOAs will approve of this.
